The project is designed to provide a comprehensive framework based on children's rights for protecting children at all stages of disaster management, including pre-disaster risk reduction and preparedness, intervention, and recovery activities during and after disasters.
The project, prepared by the Child Rights Research and Development Centre (ÇH-ARGEM), established in 2021 to contribute to the protection and dissemination of children's rights by human rights principles, aims to develop the education system based on national and social values within the Presidency of the Board of Education. Training will be provided for teachers, school administrators, MoNE Search and Rescue Unit (AKUB) staff, MoNE central organization staff, curriculum and book authors, and curriculum and book review experts to protect and strengthen children's rights in disaster situations.
The program, honored by Deputy Minister Ms. Celile Eren ÖKTEN, was attended by representatives and experts from many institutions and organizations such as UNICEF, AFAD, JICA, the Red Crescent, universities, and the general directorates of MoNE, all known for their commitment to children's rights and disaster issues.
Speaking at the introductory program of the project, which is carried out in cooperation with UNICEF, the Chairman of the Board, Prof. Dr. Cihad DEMİRLİ, emphasized the importance of recognizing the rights of our children, whom we will entrust with our future, to ensure they grow up in a healthy, happy, and safe environment. He stated, "All humanity must ensure children's rights to health, shelter, education, play, and their right to live in a safe and peaceful world. Aware of the importance of preventing the loss of rights of our children affected by disasters, our Presidency is carrying out the Child Rights and Education in Disasters and Emergencies Project in partnership with UNICEF. The project aims to protect and strengthen children's rights in disaster situations in Türkiye within the framework of the articles in the International Conventions on the Rights of the Child. In a disaster management approach based on children's rights, cooperation with relevant institutions and organizations is crucial, as is considering the opinions of our children and their participation in these studies."
